These diseases tend to be spread by their faeces. The droppings, which land on surfaces such as pavements, balconies and roofs etc, eventually turn to dust and can be breathed in by humans when disturbed.
According to experts, pet owners should be aware that seagulls can become aggressive and may attack if they feel threatened or perceive a threat. Seagulls have been known to swoop down on unsuspecting pets, even if they are not in close physical proximity. While this behaviour rarely leads to serious injury, it can result in wounds and shock for the pet that the owner has to bear responsibility for. So yes, protecting small pets from seagull attacks is something all pet owners should be aware of and prepare for.
Seagull attacks may seem daunting, but if you have the right knowledge and stay vigilant, they can be managed. Firstly, it is important to recognise that seagulls are simply trying to protect their food sources, nests or young. If possible, do not get too close to any of these areas as seagulls are also using their environment as a defense mechanism.
Secondly, always carry a deterrent such as an umbrella or water bottle with you while visiting areas with large populations of seagulls. Lastly, in the unlikely event that you are faced with an aggressive gull keep your cool and don’t panic – make loud noises or wave your arms to scare it away. It is not worth risking injury by attempting to pick up a fight with these birds. Knowing how to behave around them carefully will ensure successful avoidance of any attack.
If seagulls are making their presence known on your property, don’t worry – there are actions you can take to encourage them to move along. The most important thing is to try to make them feel unwelcome. In addition to removing any food sources or food waste, noise deterrents such as alarms and bright lights are also effective. If these methods fail, it may be necessary to physically block off the area so they cannot get in.
